The Danish Language

Image
As I mentioned in my "Catching up" post, Zac and I have started Danish lessons! Since I've been around Danes off and on for more than a decade, I do understand that the Danish language contains sounds that the English language just doesn't have (some weird guttural "r"), and I also am aware of their extra vowels. Æ  Å  Ø That doesn't mean I know anything about actually using those vowels or making those sounds. Although, Zac's colleagues showed him a satire video that suggests Danes don't actually know how to speak their language, either. It's very funny. https://youtu.be/vvtDGSIrsk8?si=vhATSh_xc4tJFqqv Figuring out the sounds is the first struggle. On past work trips, I've tried to give the address of the ALK headquarters to my taxi driver. Here's how it goes EVERY TIME: Me: I need to go to BOE-gay al-LAY one in HER-sholm. Taxi driver: Where? Me: BOO-gay ALLEE one? In HUR-sholm? Taxi driver: ... Me: BUH-GHEE all-AY? One? HER-shul...

Week Four

Image
Oh man! How have we been here four weeks already?! Friday OK, first, remember how they messed up my photo when I started work at ALK here and it was the photo of a man every time I emailed someone? Well, I saw him in the canteen. I wanted to run over and ask him if he was new too, and if so, if they had mixed up our photos and if he had gotten as many messages as I had about it, but we made eye contact and he didn't seem to recognize me, so I'm guessing that was not the case. Plus, he was surrounded by a bunch of very fancy-pants dudes and I figured I'd just seem crazy if I approached him about it, so I just left the canteen without saying a word. Like a normal human. Zac went back to visit the couch we fell in love with. The store was closed so he just stared at it through the window. We resolved to go purchase it. We've been trusting the kids to get themselves to and from school at weird times on the public busses, but Khloe either took the wrong bus or took the right...

Keeping in Touch

Image
Many friends and family members have wondered about keeping in touch with us while we're in Denmark, so here's a quick guide. Mail I sent most of you postcards with our new address (since this is a public blog, I won't post it here). I've since received a bunch of requests to explain the address, so I'll do that here for you. Also, the way I typed it on the post card is exactly how you'll address an envelope, so no need to remember, just copy what I gave you. :) Addresses in Denmark follow this basic pattern: [Street Name] [House Number] [Post code] [Municipality] [Country] The street name is usually like "Lyndbyvej" or "Carl Ploughs Vej" and the house number is typically pretty short (i.e. single or double digits). The house number sometimes includes a letter after the number, which is the result of an original plot of land being split into multiple plots. The post code is similar to a zip code in the U.S. For example, the post code for Birk...
