Harrison's Trip to Louisiana

Harrison's class took a trip to Louisiana! (Not the state, the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art.) It's a fantastic museum with lots of opportunities for children to interact and run around and even make their own art!

When they first arrived, a tour guide showed the class around the main museum and the Children's Museum, a space where Harrison was delighted to find an entire LEGO wall for building LEGO on. Unfortunately, that was not part of the plan for the day, so Harrison has requested that we return to Louisiana to make use of the wall another day.

There was no time to build LEGO on the class trip because they had a workshop on a famous Danish artist, Asger Jørn. First, they looked at some of Asger's paintings...

...then the guide showed them a room where they would be painting their own pictures in the style of Asger Jørn! Harrison said first, they closed their eyes and made lines on the paper with pencils, then opened their eyes to look for pictures or objects in the lines. From there, they moved onto the painting.

The video below (in two parts) is Harrison describing his art and his process.

After their art activity, they had lunch outside on one of the lawns. Louisiana has a great outdoor space. It's meant for people of all ages to enjoy a day at the museum!

After lunch, the class was divided into small groups and were allowed to go explore the museum on their own. Harrison was happy to be with some of his best friends, and it was very lucky that their class assistant got some fun pictures of them enjoying the art exhibits.

At the end of their self-guided museum tour, Harrison and his friends found an exhibit with a platform between two sections of water. He said the lights reflect up off the water and it looks really cool. He described it as a "sketchy platform only hanging by a few screws on the wall." He also said, "Well, it has quite a lot of screws, but...yeah," and assured us the water wasn't very deep.

Because a lot of the exhibits had descriptions in Danish, the kids were given pamphlets with a map and an English description before they left.

They got ice cream while they waited for the train home, and Harrison thought it was a pretty good day. He can't wait to go back for that LEGO wall though!
