The Great Outdoors, a Hospital Trip, and The Flaming Lips

The first half of June was so dejlig (lovely)! The kids had their class trips, of course, and you can read all about that in a separate post, but the weather has been perfect, evenings are long and relaxing, and everything smells incredible.

This good weather means we are outside a lot. We have to take advantage of it, because we know it won't last long!

Sometimes, outdoor fun comes at a price, though. Harrison made an error in judgment while he was using the go-kart attachment with the hoverboard and ended up hyper-extending his wrist and injuring his elbow. We thought he might've broken it, so we called 1813 (the non-emergency medical number that you can call anytime) and they sent us to the hospital in Gentofte for x-rays.

He was OK, but it scared him a lot. He was very well-behaved during his x-rays, so he got a little LEGO minifig keychain, and then he was good during his examination, too, so they gave him another one! Apparently, LEGO donates little treats like that to the hospitals for kids. We are so thankful to be able to seek medical advice, go to an urgent appointment, have x-rays taken, and go home knowing a bill will never come. Yay, Denmark!

Zac has also been trying to perfect the focaccia bread our canteen at work makes. He thinks he'll get it right the next time, but we haven't minded eating the trial runs!

We're all honing skills of some kind. Khloe has been making some great art lately, as usual. She gets shy about sharing it, but I think just watching her create things is amazing.

Kaden had his last DDL tournament in Odense, so I'm thankful that those trips across the very expensive bridge are done for. It was nice to get some one-on-one time during the drives, though, and his games were actually enjoyable to watch! That's not something I ever thought I'd say about baseball. I think it helps to be invested in a player on the team.

During the first game, I saw a crazy-looking insect struggling through the grass. It had a long abdomen and tiny, useless wings. I thought it might be a deformed moth, so I scooped it up and decided I was right. I knew it wouldn't survive long, so I just held it and let it perch on my boot while I watched the game. Then, right before my eyes, its wings started expanding slowly. They were soft and they blew violently in the wind, even flipping up over its head backwards, but I realized I had actually just found a newly emerged moth and it was seeking safe harbor until it could expand and harden its wings.

Me and Moth watching Kaden get ready to bat.

Kaden rushed over during his break between games and asked me to get him a hotdog. I explained that I was babysitting a moth, but he wasn't as enchanted as I was, and I figured I couldn't let my son starve, so I put the moth on my hand and walked up to the food table. Kaden took off to secure a bat for the next game or something, so basically, it was just me walking up to the food table holding a moth as I said, "Two, please!" This amused me more than it should have.

Moths can't eat hotdogs.

Anyway, it was a male "heart and dart" moth, if anyone cares, and it was fascinating to watch it pump lymph from its abdomen to expand its wings and its proboscis. I hope he made it. (Don't worry. I still watched Kaden play, too.)

ALK has been celebrating some milestones, and that means we get a little spoiled. To celebrate our most recent accomplishment, they had some parking lot festivities. There was a DJ, swag, a crepe cart, a gourmet coffee wagon, and an ice cream vendor! I ran out of hands or I would've grabbed a crepe, too.

Mostly, it's just fun to send pics like this to Matt when the opportunity arises to continue building the myth that my job is a joke and I never actually do any work. He knows that's not true. I think...

And I know we said we weren't going to go to buy any concert tickets this year, but technically, I bought tickets for The Flaming Lips last year, just like I did with Opeth and Copenhell, so we still haven't bought tickets this year, and I'm proud of us.

I'm also proud of myself for having the foresight to buy these tickets right when they became available, because they sold out fast! The Flaming Lips were playing at Vega, and they promised to play the Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots album in its entirety, so I was excited. I heard they were great to watch live, and they did not disappoint.

It's a tissue paper pink robot that floated down into my beer.

All that excitement...and June is only halfway over!
